Jesse Willenbring has spent his life getting progressively less cool.
He grew up in Minnesota, studied in New York, and is now hot stuff in Los Angeles.
Last week he opened a show at Laurel Gitlen in the LES. The paintings are abstractions of posters. The graphic content of the original has been 'pushed back' into the ground of each composition. What’s left are brilliantly colored, jazzy (did i really just use the j word?) Works collaged together with paint, charcoal, paper, and pencil.
