Wendy White is a tiny lady who paints very large paintings of sports players.
It’s the parallels between professional athletes and artists that fascinate White - the way each has a single, solitary, dedicated practice towards something that is arguably entirely selfish.
White works in a dreamy palette of pinks and greens (coincidently the same color of her hair) Starting with a photograph printed on vinyl, White uses an airbrush to apply paint - creating a glowing gesture-less surface. In some works ‘brushstrokes’ are created using the same wax masks our wowee buddy Andrea Bergart uses. They are stylized and entirely artificial. This faux painterly approach also extends off the canvas, as White positions her paintings on ‘paint spills,’ actually carpets. The whole thing is framed in gold – the perfect trophy for the mantel.
White has an upcoming solo show in Nashville if you happen to be in the area...
