Emma Kohlmann UNTITLED 2015 watercolor on paper 10 x 10 inches
Emma Kohlmann was born in the Bronx, and now lives and works in Western Massachusetts.
Kohlmann works mostly on paper - in watercolor and sumi-ink. The drawings can be both stand-alone pieces, or part of a larger collection that comes together as a zine (artist-made limited-run magazine).
My favorite works are her watercolors. Explicitly riffing on the late French-American artist Louise Bourgeois, Emma's works refuse to hold form - they bleed out into the picture plane. With quiet skill Kolhmann defines these 'loose' women - carefully applying pigment to give them just enough shape. The figures emerge as some kind of graphic sexualized free flowing icons.
Like your weird aunt who corners you every Christmas to talk about Woodstock.
