"Smith reminds us that an artist’s trajectory is a sensory reflection of individual experience."
- salon 94
Lucien Smith is all of twenty four years old. A cool cat from L.A. He now lives and works in N.Y.C.
The hype around him is growing. Fast. He's had solo shows at Half Fallery, and OHWOW, another is coming up at Salon 94. In 2012 Smith was included in Forbes 30 under 30 Art and Style. Last week he was given a black poker chip to rap with Jay-Z.
Yet... What is written about his work is complete crap.
Lucien Smith is an artist experimenting with the results of amalgamating various art genres, concepts, and techniques.
Every piece acts as a tangible moment, a chronicle of exploration as he negotiates with existence.
Seriously artworld? Lucky i'm here.
Let's not over-complicate things:
The tray work (left) is fun. I see it as a reference to slap-stick comedy pie throwing, and Julian Schnabel's 1980's bad-boy plate paintings.
The Rain Painting (right) is pretty. Made by putting paint into a fire extinguisher.
While we all try and become more articulate about him, if you can find a work by Lucien, buy it now.
