Last night, 38-year-old New York based artist, Alex Hubbard, had an opening at the hipster-hive that is Maccarone gallery. He showed 7 of his 'bent paintings.' * the works are brightly colored plastic casts of a single 'trash painting.' the trash-original, from an earlier series, is a collage of urban detritus, aka - rubbish stuck to canvas.
Hubbard then deformed each of the 7 casts. Whether sliced, draped, or hung, the 'bent paintings' become decidedly sculptural.
Hubbard's works reminded me of Richard Serra's early sculptures. A true Minimalist, Serra's artistic practice began by simply following a list of verbs... To roll, to crease, to fold, to bend etc. etc.
Go see both, on view now. Hubbard at Maccarone. Serra at Zwirner.
*Hubbard also showed a new series FIVE BAR BLUES... Taking a pun too far, the artist made 5 one-person bars, for those who are sad to drink alone. All 5 open with self-serve free booze throughout the run of show. Yes.
