Rachel Klinghoffer was born in New Jersey 1982. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Klinghoffer received her BFA in Painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2005. She received her MFA with Honors in Painting at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2012.
Since graduating, Klinghoffer has gone on to work primarily as a sculptor. Her work knots together a wide range of family ephemera - incorporating her own or her families used clothing, Hanukkah decorations, used paintbrushes, memorabilia, and miscellaneous other objects. The figurative totem Here beside the rising tide encases used garments and objects, weighted with personal history. Standing tall, the chalky pastel surface hides a core rich with messy objects and histories. The work demonstrates Klinghoffer’s use of processes that obsessively manipulate the surface - staining, scraping, drilling, building, and remaking until she arrives to her finished products.
